Human By Nature

ARTIST STATEMENT

The diverse life forms of the earth live within our human psyche‭. ‬Our relationship to other creatures influences how we see ourselves as human‭. ‬The relationship found in each of these images empowers each of its characters‭. ‬The bubble is a metaphor for the‭ ‬fragile nature of life and is a reminder of our mortality‭. ‬This metaphor is sometimes found in Renaissance still life painting‭.‬‭ ‬Other ties to Renaissance art can be felt in the lighting‭, ‬color and design‭. ‬The Dutch painter Jan van Eck‭ (‬A.D.1450‭) ‬has been‭ ‬especially influencial in these studies‭.‬

Human by Nature was originally a section of the larger exhibition A Strange Beauty‭, ‬photographic studies from the collections of‭ ‬the Denver Museum of Nature & Science‭.
