ARTIST STATEMENT
The diverse life forms of the earth live within our human psyche. Our relationship to other creatures influences how we see ourselves as human. The relationship found in each of these images empowers each of its characters. The bubble is a metaphor for the fragile nature of life and is a reminder of our mortality. This metaphor is sometimes found in Renaissance still life painting. Other ties to Renaissance art can be felt in the lighting, color and design. The Dutch painter Jan van Eck (A.D.1450) has been especially influencial in these studies.
Human by Nature was originally a section of the larger exhibition A Strange Beauty, photographic studies from the collections of the Denver Museum of Nature & Science.
