Gannet is the child of a close friend of mine. His mother, Amy Hosa, is an illustrator living in San Francisco. Our friendship goes back to the early 70’s, when Amy and I went to art school together in Cleveland.
The first portraits in this series began shortly after Gannet was born in 1981. Amy and Gannet have been great inspirations in my life and whenever I visit San Francisco, I photograph them. The latest color portraits were done in 2019, when Gannet was 38.
Amy has written about her experiences as a mother of a child with extreme special needs and in 2018 had an exhibition of writing and illustrations at the FROMM Institute at USF in San Francisco. (Her ongoing collection of memoirs is included in this gallery page.)
